Notes

For a (dubiously plausible) alternate history involving a Napoleonic naval victory over England in the War of the Third Coalition (several officers, notably Thomas Cochrane, having been bribed to switch sides some time before the battle). Upon the creation of the client Kingdom of Scotland, Marshal Étienne-Jacques-Joseph-Alexandre (Stephen James Joseph Alexander) MacDonald (regnal name James IX), the son of a Jacobite and a supposed cousin of the late Flora MacDonald, was the natural choice for its ruler. For good measure, a marriage was arranged between the Marshal’s daughter (later Anne II, Queen of Scots) and Count Rohenstart, an (illegitimate) descendant of Charles Edward Stewart, and so, after another generation (and a rather different trajectory for the French Empire), this was the result. While “Romish” Catholicism is not an enforced state religion as the old Jacobites might’ve liked, not all Protestants are pleased with this arrangement, not least because the current King James X‘s male line of descent is from a French bishop who necessarily broke his vows…
